Arts and Crafts

04 Oct Arts and Crafts

Gillingham arts and craft market all started with a plan to put on a market in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012. The response was startling and the diversity and variation in skills and crafts led the organisers to set up a regular market on the last Saturday of each month. (December event is earlier in the month offering a wide range of exclusive and individual Christmas presents. The organisers also take a break during July and August to replenish stock and have a holiday.)
Having grown so large the market now takes place in both the Methodist Hall and now into the church hall. They welcome new businesses and those needing a launch pad to tell people they are there. A wealth of talent and exclusivity blends together to promote and foster the creativity of the town’s people and bring them within reach of the buying public. The town is also served well with the weekly Country Market which takes place on a Friday morning in the Methodist Hall on sunny days spilling out into the gardens just off the main high street. Local produce including meats, dairy and preserves are sold along with plants and gifts for that special event or person.
The residents of Gillingham enjoy their art and craft and many local art and craft events are put on in a bid to raise funds for local community groups and schools. Art classes and workshops are available at the Slade centre where exhibitions can sometimes be shown. And the town is lucky enough to boast their own specialist shop; Scenes selling artist’s material, prints and picture framing and is situated right in the heart of the town.
